Carter S. King | La’yahawise

Carter S. King is an Oneida costume designer who seeks to explore the ways his heritage, performance, and theatrical arts intersect with each other.

Carter’s research focuses on Oneida performance, material culture, and historic dress. His work aims to engage with indigenous pedagogies and performance theory to further both academic and community understandings of his home. His costuming similarly moves to meld indigenous design practice with the theatrical tradition, as he continues to investigate artistic decolonization.

Carter S. King is currently attending Columbia University’s Oral History Master of Arts (OHMA) program, as well as a Native Arts Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). Carter graduated with distinction from Yale University with his B.A. in Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies.
